Coniston Water
Coniston Water is one of the most beautiful places in the Lake District to go canoeing or kayaking. With the towering Old Man of Coniston dominating the skyline, and lower fells on all sides, the views are lovely. Several parts of Coniston Water were part of the inspiration for Swallows and Amazons, and in particular Peel Island is the setting for "Wild Cat Island", a lovely spot to explore by canoe, with its secret harbour and warm, exposed rock promontories. Being a large exposed body of water, caution & experience is required on windy days, as the waves can become large very quickly.
