The Idle is a surprisingly little known river in North Nottinghamshire, that is a perfect place for canoeing. Small, with a few little weirs which are usually easy to run, it is green and rural.
The river is not developed for canoeists, so put ins and get outs can involve undergrowth and steep banks!
The Idle runs from the confluence of the Rivers Maun and Meden, down to the Trent.
The Chesterfield Canal runs through Retford, and it is possible to make a longer canoeing adventure by using this to return from the Trent to Retford.
