Paddle Points

Station Road Watford

Roadside parking opposite service road to Watford gap services M1 North bound.Access to paddle North to Lock number one of the Leicester branch of the Grand Union(bottom of staircase of 7 locks).

Or paddle South to Norton Junction,(the Southern end of Leicester Branch)and connection with main Grand Union.A short distance to the east there is a waterside pub which is next to the A5 Watling Street.(The New Inn).

Watford Locks (7)

Staircase of 6 plus 1 lock very close. Locks numbered 1-7 of the Leicester section.From the top lock to Foxton top Lock there is 20 miles of lock free canal BUT there are two tunnels through which non-powered craft are not allowed.

Kilsby Road

Road side parking on quiet road,Access to paddle to South end of Crick Tunnel and top of flight of seven locks (Watford staircase).

Crick tunnel South end

Craft must be powered and have lights,so we are barred!

Crick tunnel North end

Un-powered craft not allowed in this long tunnel.Portage would be long and difficult too.

The Bliss Canoe Trail

"The longest round tour possible" 862.25 miles 1388km a circumnavigation of England by Inland Waterways.

The trail is divided into regional sections with the aspiration that each RDT will facilitate and publish an annual opportunity for paddlers to complete their section of the tour.

This section of the trail has been adopted by Hinckley Canoe Club who will offer annually a tour on the section

Seasonal Cafe next to lock in lock keepers house.Canal is lock free for 20 miles South of here BUT has two long tunnels from which we are barred!

Debdale wharfe

Debdale Lane between A6 and Gumley.Some parking opposite marina entrance.Long lock free stretches in both directions.South to foxton Locks has pubs and food also camping,ask at pub.canal banks are a little high at Foxton though!

Paddle point South of Saddington tunnel.

This point is on the Saddington to Smeaton Westerby road.Wayside parking available,South is lock free to Market Harborough.Saddington Tunnel is 880yds,you would need good lights on your boat and air horn would be a good idea to avoid being run down by a barge!if you were to attempt it!

Parking North side has access to canal (Glen side) but there is some more parking south side.Wistow has Cafe garden centre and shops and is not far by road.

Road side parking both sides of A5199 (old A50),on South side of canal bridge.The Navigation pub has limited parking so do not park there if you are not eating or drinking there!

Aylestone Meadows - Kings Lock Car Park

Another car park with a gate height restriction - but prob around 2.5m - enough to get 4x4 with kayaks on top underneath, although with not much room to spare. The top bar is usually unlocked.


Car park is big enough for about 10 vehicles and is handy for getting on the canal or the Soar

Abbey Park Road.

Free on street parking for Canal put in.Or if no spaces Pay and display in Park.

Portage point

Get off/on the canal by the 'Soar Tour' marked post next to the bridge. The connecting launch point on the Soar is down the pathway leading away from the canal, you'll see another post and some cleared ground.
